NHL Saturday: Red Wings defending big early lead against Predators

Detroit got the jump early on their former Western Conference rivals. Can they hold the lead against one of the NHL's best? Elsewhere, the Islanders try to maintain their perch atop the Eastern Conference in Montreal.

The New York Islanders passed a big test on Friday with a win against the Pittsburgh Penguins that vaulted them to the top of the Eastern Conference.

They face a second one on Saturday: Can they keep up the pace against another Eastern threat? The Islanders visit the Montreal Canadiens fresh off a 6-3 win against the Pens, thanks in large part to Kyle Okposo's four-goal night. But as well as they've played recently, the Habs have matched the pace. Both teams are 7-2-1 in their last ten games.

Out west, the race for the final playoff spots in the Western Conference heats up. With Winnipeg's back-to-back wins this week, three teams will play Saturday to improve their position in the standings. Calgary will try to quell the Sharks, the Avalanche visit Tampa Bay and Dallas hosts the Washington Capitals.
