Jeff Gordon escaped injury after slamming into wall not covered by a SAFER barrier.
A multi-car crash sidelined several contenders, including Jeff Gordon and Denny Hamlin, during the final laps of Sunday's race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Just after a restart with the field bunched together, Hamlin broke loose and slid up the track and into a pack of cars triggering a chain reaction. In the aftermath Hamlin, Gordon and Jamie McMurray sustained heavy damage. Ryan Newman was also involved, but continued on.
Most significant, Gordon slammed an unprotected wall along the backstretch. A frustrated Gordon emerged uninjured and gestured towards the wall, which wasn't covered with a SAFER (Steel and Foam Energy Reduction) barrier.
A week ago Kyle Busch broke his right leg and left foot when he impacted an unprotected wall at Daytona International Speedway. He was released from the hospital Friday and is expected to miss several weeks. Busch was watching the race and quickly pointed out the similarities between his and Gordon's accidents.
"Pretty convenient to c that SAFER Barrier end just before (Jeff Gordon) pounds wall," Busch said. "Hope he's healthy! When will this end @NASCAR."
