Philadelphia turns to Mark Sanchez in hopes of a victory while Carolina aims to get off the snide.
On Monday night, the Philadelphia Eagles and Carolina Panthers meet up at Lincoln Financial Field with plenty on the line. Philadelphia is 6-2 and leading the NFC East, but faces the prospect of starting Mark Sanchez for the rest of the regular season after Nick Foles broke his clavicle last Sunday. Carolina is struggling after starting 2-0, going 1-4-1 over its last six games. Luckily for the Panthers, they are only a game behind the New Orleans Saints in the dismal NFC South.
The Eagles would be wise to run the ball under the lights. LeSean McCoy has muddled through the first eight games, rushing for 622 yards but only gaining 3.9 yards per carry. McCoy has come on strong lately, rushing for 349 yards on 67 carries over the last three games. The Panthers have been unable to slow down rushing attacks, ranking last in the league at 4.8 yards per attempt.
Carolina has not gotten the expected performance out of Cam Newton, leading to a stagnant offense. After losing Steve Smith, Brandon LaFell and Ted Ginn Jr. this offseason, Newton has not been able to gel with his current targets. The 2011 first-overall pick has completed just 57.4 percent of his passes for eight touchdowns and five interceptions. Kelvin Benjamin has been the only viable downfield receiving threat, catching 40 passes for 589 yards and five scores.
Luckily for the Panthers, the schedule eases up considerably after the Eagles. Carolina closes the season with the Falcons, Vikings, Saints, Buccaneers, Browns and Falcons again.
